There are so many wonderful things for couples to do in Ambleside all year round, from adventurous hikes to relaxing spa days or even exploring the waters. No visit to the Lakes is complete without a hike or walk… well, in my opinion anyway! Is there anything more romantic than watching the sunset? Pair this with a short hike for an unforgettable experience.
Orrest Head is an easy, short circular walk with fantastic views over Windermere. The start point is well signposted, as is the rest of the walk. The walk up Orrest Head was Wainwright’s introduction to the Lake District when he first got off the train at Windermere… so you’re in for a treat! The circular route is just under 2.2 miles, making it perfect for a leisurely afternoon.
#2 Indulge in an Evening Spa Experience in Ambleside
Relaxing at a spa with your partner is a wonderful way to unwind together. Whether you opt for a massage, a facial, or just want to soak in the hot tub, you won’t regret visiting a spa. To make it even better, why not book a table for dinner there too?

#4 Go Stargazing in Ambleside: Best Spots for a Romantic Evening
If the weather is clear, stargazing is a lovely, romantic way to spend the evening. Cumbria boasts some of the darkest skies in England, with thousands of stars visible on a clear night.
While there’s nowhere specifically in Ambleside itself that’s amazing for stargazing, there are a few spots nearby that are definitely worth a visit:
- Tarn Hows Car Park
- Blea Tarn Car Park
- Kirkstone Pass Car Park
No matter the time of year you visit, remember to wrap up warm, take a hot drink, and be patient—it can take 15-20 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the darkness.
#5 Enjoy a Delicious Dinner Together at Ambleside’s Top Restaurants
Ambleside is packed with places to eat, offering plenty of choices and something for everyone. There are cosy pubs and relaxed restaurants, including some Michelin-starred options in and around Ambleside!
