Camping in the UK during summer is always so much fun. You can’t guarantee the weather, but you can guarantee a lovely time. So, you’ve decided to go for it and planned a trip to Devon… hopefully, you’ve got your campsite booked. If not, don’t worry. There’s a huge array of campsites ranging from budget basic campsites, usually on farms with minimal facilities, to what can be described as holiday parks with activities and pools. The campsites I enjoy staying on best usually fall somewhere in the middle. Now it’s time to start packing, here’s what to pack for your summer camping trip to Devon (or anywhere coastal in the UK)

What to Pack for a Camping Trip in Devon
I’m not going to go into too much detail around the basics, I’ll list them below before we get to the more specific items which I think might be useful.
Packing Essential Camping Gear
- Tent, pillow, sleeping bag, or duvet
- Sleeping Mat or Mattress: My tip would be don’t scrimp on this. I can’t tell you how many cheap inflatable airbeds have popped on me over the years!
Enhancing Comfort with Chairs
Chairs are absolutely not a must, but they certainly elevate your camping experience!

Footwear Essentials: Good Walking Boots or Sturdy Shoes
If you plan on doing any sort of walking while away, you may need something more than sandals – it could be wet and cold and the coastal paths can be pretty rocky!
Don’t Forget to Pack Water Shoes for Rocky Beaches
Whilst we’re on the topic of shoes, I’d recommend taking some water shoes with you. Some of the beaches in Devon can be quite rocky and it can be painful to wade into the sea. My water shoes were from Lidl, and they’ve protected my feet on numerous occasions.
Beach Comfort: Something to Sit On
The beaches in Devon are absolutely beautiful. Depending on what you like, you can visit golden sand beaches or go on a bit of an adventure and find some ‘secret beaches’ where often you can be the only people there! Don’t forget to take something to sit on at the beach like a picnic blanket or rug.
Be Prepared: Waterproofs
It’s safe to say almost every trip in the UK requires you to bring your waterproofs along! One day the sun can be shining and the next, well, you might need your winter woolies on!
Cooking and Eating Gear to Pack for Delicious Camping Meals
Food tastes so much better when camping. I don’t know why, but it just does. Some simple go-to camping meals of mine are pasta and fajitas. A simple one-burner stove, your cooking equipment, pots and pans, cutlery, and don’t forget a glass of something nice to wash it all down.
Lighting for Cozy Evenings Whilst Camping
A battery-powered lantern for your tent is always a good idea. Once the sun has gone down, you can get cozy but still read or play a game inside. It’s also really helpful for when you need to find something, much better than trying to use your phone torch!
Don’t Forget the Suncream
Well… you never know!
The Convenience of Camping Near the CAR
The best thing about most campsites in the UK is you can park your car right beside your tent, so essentially you can bring as much stuff as you can fit! Do double-check this is the case though, as I have, on more than one occasion, found myself lugging piles of stuff from my car to where my tent was pitched!
Discovering Caffyn’s Farm: A Devon Camping Gem
One of my favorite campsites in Devon is Caffyn’s Farm, near Lynton. You can walk to the beach, there are brilliant facilities, including a farm shop and a lovely cafe, and you can have a campfire which really makes for a memorable experience.

Ready, Set, Camp!
Now, throw it all in the car and enjoy your weekend!
