So, you’ve got just one day to explore the stunning Lake District? With only 24 hours to soak in its beauty, you’re in for an unforgettable adventure. Known for its rugged mountains, picturesque lakes, quaint villages, and cozy pubs, the Lake District is a must-see for anyone visiting the UK. In this guide, I’ll cover exactly what to see, where to eat, where to stay and how to make the most of your precious time in this lovely part of the UK.
I live just a 30-minute drive from the Lake District, so day trips here are a regular occurrence. If you’re planning to see the Lake District in one day, I think it’s best to stick to one area. Despite its appearance on the map, driving distances can take longer than you might expect.
Getting There
You can either arrive into Windermere by train, bus, or car. Bear in mind that during peak times, the roads around the Lake District can get busy. Set off early to avoid traffic and make the most of your day!
Breakfast with a View
Start your day with breakfast at Force Cafe, just outside Ambleside. This spot is perfect for breakfast or brunch, offering stunning views from the terrace. There’s parking on-site, so you can easily start your day without any hassle. The breakfast here is delicious and sets you up for a fabulous day ahead.

Explore Ambleside and Windermere
Ambleside sits on the edge of Windermere, England’s largest lake, which is approximately 11 miles long and surrounded by mountains. The best way to see it is by getting out on the water. Take the “Red Cruise” boat tour from Bowness to Ambleside, where you can hop off and explore the town before returning. The tours typically have an onboard cafe and provide an interesting commentary about the area’s history. It’s a peaceful and scenic way to take in the lake’s beauty.

Wander Through Ambleside
Ambleside is a bustling town full of charming shops, cafes, restaurants, and traditional pubs. Make sure you visit the Bridge House, a tiny 17th-century house built over a beck. Originally an apple store, this quaint structure is now maintained by the National Trust and is free to visit. It’s the perfect spot for some quirky photos and a step back in time. Apparently, a rather large family lived here at some point!

While you’re in Ambleside, don’t miss the chance to explore some of the best outdoor shops in the UK. Gaynor Sports and The Climbers Shop offer a wide range of gear for all your hiking and outdoorsey needs. Even if you’re not looking for anything in particular you’ll probably end up finding something, there’s so much variety and they’re also brilliant shops for finding presents for people in!
Hike to Orrest Head
After returning to Windermere, it’s time to stretch your legs. Orrest Head is a lovely, well-marked walk starting from Windermere town itself.
This viewpoint was Alfred Wainwright’s first introduction to the Lake District, inspiring his famous pictorial guides. The twenty-minute ascent from the A591 is well worth the effort for the views. Trust me, you get a lot of beautiful scenery for very little effort.

Visit Hill Top
Hill Top, the home of Beatrix Potter, is one of the Lake District’s most popular attractions. This house inspired her beloved drawings of Peter Rabbit. It’s packed with her original belongings (so if you’re interested in history it’s very intriguing!) and surrounded by gorgeous gardens, Hill Top is a must-visit. National Trust members get free entry, or you can purchase tickets in advance. It’s like stepping into one of her stories, and you can easily see why she found so much inspiration here.
Evening in Ambleside
Wrap up your day back in Ambleside. Enjoy a meal at one of the stylish restaurants or traditional pubs, and reflect on the day’s adventures. For a fun dining experience, consider Bar eS Ambleside, which serves Mexican tapas and craft beer. If you’re in the mood for something casual, The Priest Hole is a fantastic option with its hearty British fare and cozy atmosphere. Or grab a pizza to go from The Sourdough Pizza Company. Delish!
