Exploring the Lake District doesn’t have to mean hiking for hours and hours, sometimes you may not have long to go off adventuring, or perhaps you’re new to hiking and prefer a shorter hike. Regardless of why, here are 5 easy hikes you’ll enjoy in the Lake District.
Tarn Hows
Tarn Hows is a 2 mile circular walk that’s fairly flat, and very accessible. You can rent a ‘tramper’ (electric wheelchair) from the National Trust which enables the less mobile to enjoy the hike too, which I think is amazing! The views are beautiful, and it’s an easy hike that the whole family can enjoy. There are toilets in the car park and plenty of benches to stop and rest on, or enjoy your picnic.

Orrest Head
Orrest head starts from Windermere, making it an easy Lake District hike you can do whilst staying in the town, without needing to take the car out. It was Wainwright’s introduction to the Lake District when he got off the train for the first time at Windermere! If you’re lucky enough to get a clear day then for the little effort needed, the views can’t be beaten! The circular route is just under 2.2 miles.

Catbells
Short but steep, Catbells is an incredible hike in the Lake District with amazing views! This fell is one of the most popular in the Lake District with views looking out over Derwentwater. The path is generally well trodden with the final section of the approx 2.3 mile hike being a bit of a scramble. If you’re looking to tick off your first Wainwright then it’s a great place to start!
Grizedale Forest
There are endless trails at Grizedale Forest to choose from, ranging from 0.6 miles to 10 miles long. On arrival you can check the maps dotted around the car park and work out which hike is going to be best for you. There are sculptures dotted around and there’s a visitor centre with a cafe! Despite it being a forest, don’t be fooled, there are some areas where it opens out to wonderful views!
Gummer’s How
Gummer’s How is a fab short, easy hike in the southern area of the Lake District, that all the family can enjoy. The circular route is approximately 1.5 miles. The walk meanders through a forested area climbing up the man made steps, before opening up at the top to a great view overlooking Windermere and beyond. There is a short climb during this hike however the path is well marked and easy to follow. As there is a proper car park at the start of the walk, Gummer’s How makes for a stress free adventure that can be completed in a morning or an afternoon.

Whichever hike you choose, I hope you enjoy your time in the Lake District. Leave a comment below and let me know which one you decided to go for!
